Our study today will be concerning the church, what is the church, and where do we find the church? Scripturally written of the church, Paul by the Spirit of God, teaches us by God’s ability, Salute one another with an holy kiss. The Churches of Christ salute you, Romans 16:16. What made these first century churches the churches of Christ in the first century will make all churches to be the churches of Christ today. Let me say first, where can this church be found today? Simply, and scripturally written, in the heart of the believer, according to what God has inspired to be written. The second is this, what makes the church to be the churches of Christ, whether in the first century or in the twenty first (21) century? This pattern does not change from one century to another. In the beginning of the church, the word that established the church is the same word that builds the church in your life today. So, what are we saying? The word that will make you a member of the church today is the same word that made the house of Israel the church on the day of Pentecost at Jerusalem. What word are we talking about? The word that came through twelve apostles, it is their doctrine that made the churches the churches of Christ the day the church was given to the nation Israel in Jerusalem at Acts 2:14-47. What word added Israel to the church? The word that was preached for the first time. Israel asked, Men, and brethren, what shall we do? Acts. 2:37. Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost, Acts 2:38. Peter also told them; Save yourselves from this untoward generation, Acts 2:40. And this is what they did. They left the doctrines of men, and believed on the Lord Jesus Christ by receiving the word that came by the mouth of Peter, having been put there by the Holy Ghost. Then they that gladly received his word were baptized, and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls, And they continued steadfastly in the apostles’ doctrine, and in fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers, Acts 2:41-42. I would like to repeat John 1:11-12 and apply it to the people today. He came unto His own, and His own received Him not, but as many as received Him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on His name. The same name that was preached by the apostle Peter, obey by the people, and the Lord added to the church daily, such as should be saved, Acts 2:47. Except the word of your salvation be preached by an apostle, it is not salvation. The baptism of Matthew 28:19, was it preached by an apostle? The word of God is right, the word of man is wrong
