June 8, 1961

Construction began this week on the new Whitesburg Municipal Airport to be located on top of a mountain at Colson. The airport is to have a 3,000-foot landing strip, which can be lengthened to 5,000 feet.

Dave L. Craft of Jenkins and Kendall Boggs of Cumberland have been employed by the Letcher County Board of Education as assistant superintendents. Craft is to have charge of secondary supervision and National Defense Education. Boggs is to be director of instruction. Each will receive $8,000 a year.

Letcher Fiscal Court has set salaries for new officials who will take office next year. They include: county judge, $6,000 a year; judge’s secretary, $3,000 a year; county attorney, $1,800 a year; county clerk, $7,200 a year; (to come partly from fees); and county commissioners, $5,400 a year.

June 10, 1971

Many mountain migrants who left eastern Kentucky during the past 20 years are moving back in significant numbers. Superintendents of both Jenkins and Letcher County school systems say enrollment is no longer dropping, and country store owners report people are stopping in looking for places to live so they can move back.

Fishpond Lake is reported polluted, contaminated, vandalized, and unswimmable.

Hundred of coal miners, many of them disabled by black lung, and their wives went to Washington, D.C., to seek support for a reform of the Black Lung Law.

June 11, 1981

The jobless rate fell slightly in Letcher County in April to 14.3 percent from 14.9 percent in March. State unemployment figures showed at 994 Letcher County residents were without jobs in April and 5,953 were employed.

Officials are examining a human skeleton found at Linefork but state medical examiner said it probably is a native American and could be hundreds of years old.

Three Letcher County schools are to get new basketball coaches this year. They are Letcher, Whitesburg, and Fleming-Neon.

Members of the Letcher County Public Library Board plan to appeal an apparent denial of state help toward construction of the Harry M. Caudill Memorial Library in Whitesburg.

The new $1,250,000 U.S. Post Office in Whitesburg will be open for business beginning at 8 a.m., next Monday, June 18.

School consolidation will be the subject next week at a special meeting of the Letcher County Board of Education. The board has invited Mark Ryles, director of the Division of Facilities Management for the Kentucky Department of Education, to come to Whitesburg for a “working session” regarding plans to consolidate Letcher County’s three high schools into one.

Letcher Fiscal Court voted four to two Monday night to reject its redistricting committee’s recommendations. That gives the court 60 days to come up with its own plan for redistricting the county magisterial districts. Fiscal courts must reapportion their districts in the year after each federal census.

Cato will open its newest store June 20 in Whitesburg. The new store is located in the Walmart Shopping Center.
