These volunteers help keep food pantry open

The Letcher County Food Pantry held a volunteer appreciation breakfast at Dairy Queen in Whitesburg on April 3. Volunteers were thanked for their hard work and service. Tom Watko and Vicki Holbrook are the new co-directors of the food pantry. Not all pantry volunteers were present for the photo. In March, the food pantry provided food boxes to 500 households, with an estimated 1,020 individuals served. This number doesn’t count the pantry’s support of the various school backpack programs, which provide food to hungry children. “The board of directors of the Letcher County Food Pantry wishes to thank its community partners for their donations to the program, especially Food City, Walmart, Isom IGA,Grow Appalachia, many local churches and individuals,” the board said in a statement. “To the volunteers and donors: thank you for helping the Letcher County Food Pantry, and thank you for helping those in need.”
