Thieves remove tin roof, tools from church shelter

Police are looking for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for stealing tools and metal from a church retreat near an entrance to Little Shepherd Trail.

Lt. Brian Damron of the Letcher County Sheriff ’s Department said all of the tin covering a picnic shelter located on property owned by Truth Ministries at Pine Mountain was stolen as well as battery-powered drills, chainsaws and other tools located in an industrial-size box. Damron estimates the loss to be about $3,000.

James Pennington, the pastor of Truth Ministries, noticed the lock was missing from the gate on Oct. 24 and says the crime was committed between the evening of Oct. 22 and the morning of Oct. 24, according to Damron.

A family reunion was held at the picnic area earlier on Oct. 22. The property is located off U.S. 119 at the top of Pine Mountain near Whitesburg.

Anyone with information about vehicles leaving the property or anyone who knows the location of the stolen items is asked to contact the Letcher County Sheriff ’s Department at 633- 2293. Callers can remain anonymous.

Damron said metal thefts are becoming a common occurrence in the area because thieves are able to take items to some scrap yards and sell them.
