Thornton man, 19, charged with trying to kill his mother

A Letcher Grand Jury has indicted a man on charges of attempting to murder his mother.

James Seth Cornett, 19, of Wildflower Road, Thornton, is facing charges of fourth-degree assault, first-degree criminal mischief and attempted murder in the incident, which allegedly occurred Sunday, August 2.

Cornett was arrested the next day on a warrant and then indicted Thursday.

Cornett is accused in a warrant obtained by Kentucky State Police Trooper Tyler Smith of shoving Tammy Cornett’s head into the windshield of her car and punching her in the face, knocking her to the ground and injuring her. The warrant and indictment say he then shot at her three times, shot the windshield out of her car, and drove her side-by-side through her picket fence three times, causing more than $1,000 damage to the car, side-by-side and fence.

Cornett was already in jail, but was indicted on Thursday. Trooper Smith testified before the grand jury.
