Thornton man among 11 killed in holiday accidents

A Thornton man was one of at least 11 people who were killed in traffic crashes in Kentucky during the Christmas holiday period.

Deputy Letcher County Coroner Wallace Bolling Jr. said Jimmy P. Mullins, 49, of 5508 Thornton Road, died in a onevehicle accident at Thornton on Christmas Eve. Bowling said Mullins was driving on KY 1862, near the WXKQ radio studios, at 4:28 a.m. on December 24 when Mullins “overcorrected” his vehicle after it ran into a ditch line.

The Neon Volunteer Fire and Rescue Squad transported Mullins to the Whitesburg hospital, where he died. The accident is still under investigation by Kentucky State Police Trooper David Combs.

State police say at least 10 other people were killed in wrecks during the Christmas period.

One of the deaths was that of a pedestrian in Jefferson County.

Other fatal single vehicle crashes occurred in Bourbon, Breathitt, Campbell, Fayette, Floyd, Madison, Pulaski, Rowan and Wayne counties.

The KSP said the figures are preliminary and local police reports could increase the toll.

The 811 known traffic fatalities in Kentucky through Dec. 28 were 50 fewer than the number killed through the same period in 2007.

Mullins was the son of James Mullins Sr. and Verna Mullins, both of Cocoa Beach, Florida, and the husband of Ruth Bourne Mullins. Other survivors include a son, Joshua Mullins of Wise, Va.; two daughters, Laura Lane of Big Stone Gap, Va., and Elizabeth Downey of Greenwood, Ind.; three sisters; and 11 grandchildren, Victoria, Desiree, Zachery, Jordan, Tyler, McKenzie, Luke, Ethan, Hunter, Harmony, and Tanaya.

Funeral services were held December 28 at Letcher Funeral Home. Burial was in the Haven of Rest Cemetery in Mayking.
