Thousands rally in Knott to protest energy proposal

HINDMAN, Ky.

Organizers say more than 5,000 people showed up for a rally in Knott County over the weekend to protest an energy bill they say would hurt the industry.

The proposed Cap and Trade bill before Congress is aimed at reducing emissions and improv- ing the environment.

But demonstrators at the Knott County Sportsplex on Aug. 1 said they fear the bill would penalize states that burn coal and increase energy costs.

State Rep. Jim Gooch says coal needs to be burned cleaner, but the bill shouldn’t risk jobs in exchange for unproven alternative energy sources.
