Time to collect gift-filled shoeboxes for the needy

Next week First Baptist Church in Whitesburg will collect gift-filled shoeboxes to be delivered to needy children worldwide.

This will mark the 10th year the church has served as the Operation Christmas Child collection center for southeast Kentucky and southwest Virginia. Last year, 13,628 shoeboxes were sent to the church.

Operation Christmas Child is a project of Samaritan’s Purse headed by Franklin Graham. The shoeboxes, filled with different toiletries, school supplies, candy, toys and other items, are collected and distributed to more than eight million needy children in 90 different countries, including the United States.

Drop off gift-filled shoeboxes at the church, which is located at 170 Madison Ave., from 4 – 8 p.m. Nov. 12 through Nov. 16. On Nov. 17, shoeboxes will be collected from 1 – 6 p.m. and from noon until 8 p.m. on Nov 19.
