— Brooke Saurer (left), a seventh-grade student at Whitesburg Middle school, won the Letcher County Spelling Bee on February 8 and will return to state competition. Kirsten Sexton (center), an eighth-grade student at Arlie Boggs Elmentary School placed second. Darhla Miles, a seventh-grade student at Letcher Middle School finished third. Saurer will represent Letcher County at the Kentucky Derby Festival Spelling Bee on March 9 at the PNC Club at Papa John’s Cardinal Stadium in Louisville. Saurer was a fourth-grade student the first time she competed in the state spelling bee. She is the daughter of James and Valerie Saurer of Partridge.
