Fifty-seven Wisconsin residents got a taste of Kentucky moonshine as the first major bus tour arrived at the Kentucky Mist Moonshine distillery over the weekend.
The tour was arranged by Prestonsburg Tourism.
Kentucky Mist owner Colin Fultz said Prestonsburg was putting together a tour and needed additional places for the visitors to see, so they chose the Whitesburg distillery.
“It was a good day,” Fultz said “They came in and did a tour and a tasting.”
Kentucky Mist opened in September 2015, and relies mostly on tourist trade. This is the first time a full bus tour has visited the distillery, however.
“That’s where we make most of our money is out-oftowners,” Fultz said.
Kentucky Mist has started to branch out since opening the distillery here, with two new bottlers opening this year. A Kentucky Mist store and bottling facility opened in Myrtle Beach, S.C., on April 30, and a similar storefront is planned to open in The Summit at Fritz Farm in Lexington this month.
All distilling will still be done in Whitesburg, with the moonshine being shipped to the other locations for bottling.
