Tourism commission plans historic marker competition

The Letcher County Tourism and Convention Commission will sponsor an historic marker essay competition in which three winners will receive $100 each in prize money. The essay writers will research, document and preserve historic events that have occurred in Letcher County, and develop the content for historical markers. The competition is open to any student in the Jenkins Independent School System or the Letcher County School System.

Essays are limited to 75- 150 words. Historic markers can hold up to 75 words on one side and up to 150 using two sides. The subject matter can promote, preserve and mark the spot where some historic incident identifying a person, place or event has occurred. The marker may not repeat the content of any of the existing markers. Students must submit documentation to prove the incident occurred and to its importance in preserving the history of Letcher County.

The competition will be judged by a panel comprised of two members of the Letcher County Historical Society, two members of the Letcher County Tourism Commission and a member of the Letcher County Judge/Executive’s office. Deadline for entries is January 16, 2010. The three $100 winners will be announced on January 22, 2010.

The work of the finalists will be submitted to the State Historical Society for approval as historic markers. For additional information, contact David Narramore, chairman of the LCTCC, at 633-4854.
