Volunteers and donations are now being sought for the annual Tree of Hope, in which Christmas gifts are gathered for children from low-income families. Last year, more than 500 children in Letcher County received gifts from the Tree of Hope.
The names of the children come from the schools, Kentucky River Community Care, social services, the women’s shelter and the Helping Hands programs, says Tree of Hope coordinator Tiffanie Brewer. She said the first names of the children will not put on the tree, only the designation of boy or girl.
Brewer says she is planning to hold fundraisers for the Tree of Hope and needs assistance. The fundraisers will include a roadblock, a booth at the Mountain Heritage Festival, trash pick-up, a car wash, a yard sale, a soup bean dinner and an auction with donated items. Single donations will also be accepted.
She also is seeking a permanent location for the Tree of Hope and hopes to have a rental site donated.
