A 76- year- old Knott County man died from injuries he sustained last week when his sport utility vehicle collided with a Pepsi delivery truck near Carr Creek Lake.
Police say Johnny Childers of Redfox died after the 2005 Ford SUV he was driving pulled into the path of the Pepsi truck while Childers was attempting to turn left from KY 160 into the southbound lane of KY 15. The accident occurred at about 2:44 p.m. on July 10, Kentucky State Police said.
Childers was pronounced dead at the scene by the Knott County coroner. The driver of the Pepsi truck, Jason Holcomb, 40, of Mayking, received minor injuries and was taken to the Hazard hospital, where he was treated and released.
Police say Childers wasn’t wearing a seat belt at the time of the collision with the 2001 International truck. Impairment is not suspected as a contributing factor to the wreck, police said.
Childers was the owner of Mountain Monument Company in Viper. He was employed as a funeral attendant at Hindman Funeral Home for more than 27 years.
Childers is survived by wife Mildred Sue Hayes Childers; son Johnny Clark, and daughter Dorthea. Funeral services were held July 14 at Hindman Funeral Services Chapel. Entombment followed in the Bethel Memorial Mausoleum in Hindman.
