Two men arrested after welder found

Two Letcher County men were arrested Sunday after the sheriff’s department recovered a stolen MIG welder.

Brandon R. McElroy, 31, of 29 Brick Street, Jenkins, and Emmitt E. McElroy, 25, of 270 Vates Branch, Whitesburg, were each charged with third-degree burglary and receiving stolen property over $300.

Letcher County Deputy Sheriff Jason Bates said someone saw the McElroys on May 13 sitting on the property of Millstone Construction with a lug nut wrench. The man thought their presence was unusual and tried for two hours to call Steve Bentley, the owner of Millstone Construction. Bentley went to his business after receiving the call and discovered the Miller MIG welder valued at $3,500 was missing.

“Someone had broken the lock off of the door and taken a MIG welder off of an oxygen tank and torn the hose,” said Bates.

Bates said a woman notified Bentley that she had seen a green truck with a welder in the back of it.

Sheriff Danny Webb drove to Brick Street in Jenkins and found the green truck. Bates said Brandon and Emmitt McElroy confessed to taking the welder and told the sheriff where he could find it.

Both men are lodged in the Letcher County Jail.

Bates has charge of the investigation.
