Two spectators charged with assaulting a referee after the end of a middle school girls’ basketball game in October pleaded guilty on Monday to amended charges.
Billy Joe Smith, 32, of 98 Fall Drive, Whitesburg, pleaded guilty on Feb. 28 in Letcher District Court to assault on a sports official (first offense). He was sentenced to six months in jail probated for 18 months on unsupervised probation. Smith is not to be at any sporting events where Michael Eldridge is officiating, nor can he have any contact with Eldridge.
Kathy Nicole Sanders, 27, of Redfox in Knott County, pleaded guilty to menacing. She was sentenced to 45 days in jail to be probated for 18 months unsupervised on the condition that she cannot be at any sporting event where Michael Eldridge is officiating. Sanders also can’t have any contact with Eldridge.
A restitution hearing for Smith and Sanders is set for 1 p.m. on April 8 in Letcher District Court.
