Administrators of the Letcher County Public School System recently decided that two schools in the district will not have to miss two days of Christmas break after all.
Twyla Messer, assistant superintendent of the Letcher County School System, said Beckham Bates Elementary School and West Whitesburg Elementary School will be in session on Dec. 21 but will be closed Dec. 22.
The board voted at its meeting Nov. 23 to require schools that had missed more than two days because of flu-like symptoms and other illnesses to hold classes the first two days of the scheduled Christmas break. During the meeting the board approved BBES, Cowan, Letcher, Martha Jane Potter, WWES and Whitesburg Middle School to make up the two days in December.
Messer said staff at BBES and WWES had previously made up one of the missed days by holding professional development for school staff.
Arlie Boggs Elementary and Fleming-Neon Elementary schools and Letcher County Central High School will be off the entire week of Dec. 21.
