WMMT will present the second installment of its new concert series, WMMT Rocks! Live, with special guests Van Lear Black, in the Appalshop Theater on Thursday, Oct. 25 at 8 p.m.
WMMT Rocks! Live showcases the musical talent in the region by promoting area rock bands. “The idea is to retain the talent in these mountains and promote these bands within the region instead of promoting a ‘better’ road out of here,” says Brett Ratliff, general manager of WMMT. He adds, We want to give bands a place to perform here at home and help them get the recognition they deserve.”
Van Lear Black, formed in Johnson County, is rock ‘n’ roll with a Southern edge and a soulful, bluesy vibe but with a hard rock drive. The front man, Sean Whiting, spent the first several years of his music career performing in cover bands and playing wherever and whenever the opportunity arose, but for the last several years has been focusing on songwriting. Lead guitar player Greg Cline brings a lot of experience to the mix, having spent the last 20 plus years as a studio musician and working on dozens of rock, country, bluegrass, and gospel sessions.
Bass and backup vocalist Mike Hayden brings his fair share of experience, as well having spent a portion of the ‘90s with a nationally touring country act. Percussionist Josh Daniels is a three-time Guitar Center Drum-off champion and the youth and energy behind the unique V.L.B. sound.
Formed in the summer of 2011, Van Lear Black has already had the opportunity to share the stage with the up-and-coming Nashville rock act The Jompson Brothers and Chicago rockers The Steepwater Band. The debut V.L.B album was released in June 2012.
In addition to the live concert, WMMT Rocks! Live is recorded and will air on the following Sunday, Oct. 28, at 7 p.m. during The Rock Show with Greg on WMMT, 88.7 FM. There will be a $10 admission charge for the live show. More information can be found at www.wmmt.org.
