Letcher County has temporarily closed the section of Fishpond Lake known as the Boy Scout Camp after vandals destroyed the restrooms there.
“They ripped everything in there out of the walls,” Judge/Executive Jim Ward said.
The area is a popular camping, fishing and picnicking spot at the county-owned lake.
Ward said he has told employees to order replacement fixtures for the bathrooms, and the camp will reopen once the restrooms are functioning again.
The county had been using its paid county police force, the Letcher County Rangers, to patrol the parks and had little trouble with vandalism, but those officers were laid off as a result of budget cuts.
Ward said he would probably appoint an unpaid auxiliary officer to patrol the park until the budget situation changes.
