Vet earns diploma

A Whitesburg-area man has received his high school diploma 45 years after he left to fight in Vietnam.

Although Jack Newman of Solomon had completed his GED and taken some college classes, he regretted not having a high school diploma.

“I felt out of place because I didn’t have one,” said Newman. “It was just an odd feeling. It’s just a little piece of paper, but I missed it.”

The diploma from New Breman High School in Ohio is backdated to 1967 so Newman feels like he was graduated with his class.

Newman, who had served in the Army, sent paperwork from the military to Ohio and said a veterans’ organization and his high school assisted with the process.
