Veterans Center receives donation

The 10th District American Legion and Ladies Auxiliary made a trip to the Eastern Kentucky Veterans Center in Hazard in December to present a monetary gift to the center for care of the veterans. This is the third consecutive year of what promises to be an annual event.

The money was raised by the members of the 10th District which is comprised of Jenkins, Martin, Neon and Whitesburg. It was earmarked for the Veterans Trust Fund to buy whatever they need.

The center was funded through appropriations from House Bill 51 signed by Gov. Paul Patton in 1998, and center was officially opened in March 2002. The facility has 120 beds and has a long waiting list. Currently there are 115 men and five women receiving care in the form of rehabilitation or convalescence. The center is named The Paul E. Patton Eastern Kentucky Veterans Center in honor of the governor who saw the need and convinced the Kentucky Legislature to provide the funding.
