Virgil Lee Oakes, 73, died Jan. 19 at his home in Gary, Ind. after a long illness.
He was a son of the late Johnny and Cliva Oakes of Weeksbury.
Oakes was born in Lee County, Va. and attended Wheelwright High School in Floyd County.
He retired after working many years for General Motors in Chicago, Ill. Oakes was a member of the Free Masons. He loved being with family, fishing and listening to bluegrass and country music.
In addition to his wife, Patty Belcher Oakes, of Gary, Ind., he also is survived by three children, Lisa (the late Billy) Witte of Chesterton, Ind., Johnny (Stacy) Oakes of Demotte, Ind. and Dennis (Michelle) Oakes of Valparaiso, Ind.; nine grandchildren; and four siblings, Ann (Nick) Crowley of Duck River, Tenn., Kenny (Patricia) Oakes of Greenwood, Ind., Della (Roger) Hunter of Nicholasville, and Freddy (Sarah) Oakes of Thornton.
Funeral services will be held at Edmonds and Evans Funeral Home in Chesterton, Ind. at 10 a.m. on Jan. 26.
