Walgreens is expected to take over both Rite Aid Pharmacies in Letcher County by next month.
Walgreens Boots Alliance, Inc., the parent company of Walgreens drugstores, bought 1,932 Rite Aid stores, two distribution centers and the associated stock in October for $4.375 billion cash. It plans to complete the purchases by spring and rebrand the Rite Aid stores as Walgreens. It will shut down 600 locations, mostly where stores are within one mile of each other.
The stores in Whitesburg and Jenkins are among those purchased.
Walgreens has made no announcements about the future of the stores here, however it has already applied for a liquor and beer package license in Whitesburg, to be located at the site of the existing Rite Aid. It has not yet applied for a license in Jenkins.
A change in ownership will require a change in the liquor license, if the company intends to continue selling alcoholic beverages.
