Water tank vandalized at Sandlick

Officials are investigating the vandalism of a water tank located at the top of Sandlick Mountain.

Jackie Joseph, office manager for the Letcher County Water and Sewer District, said the tank had to be drained twice because the vandals apparently swam in the water after breaking through a fence that surrounds the tank. It takes 30,000 gallons to fill the tank, she said.

According to Joseph, the vandalism could be considered an act of terrorism under the U.S. Homeland Security Act because it involves tampering with a public water source.

The case is being investigated by the Kentucky State Police.
