On April 16, Tobulayefa “La La” Watts signed a national letter of intent to play basketball for Sienna College, located in Albany, N.Y.
“This is one of the best days of my life; it’s like a dream come true,” she said.
Watts played her junior year and her senior year of basketball at Jenkins Middle High School.
She averaged 14.9 points per game, 12.9 rebounds per game, and 7 blocks per game this past season. “It feels great to have the opportunity to play at the next level,” Watts said.
Her coach, Wesley Bryant, said “the sky is the limit for La La. She has only been playing for five years or so and she has improved so much during her time here at Jenkins. She is going to be an excellent shot blocker and rebounder at the next level. She’s 6’3” and is a rim runner on offense. She faced triple teams every game against very good teams. We played a tougher schedule this year so we could get her noticed. She has earned her Division 1 scholarship. This is the second Division 1 player we have produced in three years.”
It was the right fit because it was a smaller community, Watts said. “I like the feel of being in a small community.”
Watts is excited about her future at Sienna, but will miss Jenkins as well. “The things I have learned here at Jenkins, I will take with me at Sienna. The school and basketball teams are like a family. That feeling of your environment being surrounded with a family atmosphere is like that at Sienna too,” she said
Watts is a fast learner. “A lot of times we would give La La the ball at the top of the key and let her drive past the other team’s big. Her drop-step spin move is the best I’ve ever seen, boy or girl,” said Bryant.
