Letcher County Central High School students recently constructed a 40-foot-diameter wetland adjoining their outdoor classroom. The students used a grant from PRIDE as well as the help of Tom Biebighauser, US. Forest Service wildlife biologist; Kevin Wright, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers park ranger at Carr Creek Lake; and Sam Adams of The Head of Three Rivers Project, and equipment provided by Millstone Construction of Ermine for the project. Regina Donour’s investigative science class and Scott Boggs’s outdoor education class combined on the wetland. There are signs and sightings of elk and turkey in the area, and students plan to monitor the activities of these and the birds and other animals that will make use of the area.
