Whitesburg pool is getting an upgrade

Whitesburg Mayor James Wiley Craft says people can expect to see major changes at the Whitesburg Municipal Swimming Pool this summer.

“There will be better organization and better supervision of the children that are there. It will be much, much better,” said Craft.

Because Craft said he heard that several children got their feet cut on cracked concrete on the bottom of the pool last summer, city workers spent last week sandblasting the cracked cement.

“We’re going to take all of that old sealant up and resurface the bottom of the pool,” said Craft.

Craft estimated the repairs to cost $35,000. “The actual materials we are putting in the bottom of the pool will cost $26,000,” he said.

Besides repairing the pool, swimmers will notice that the pool has new managers, Victor and Johnette Gainer.

Victor Gainer said there will be changes in the concession stand. He hopes to sell an assortment of candy and ice cream on most days. Hamburgers, hot dogs, barbecued ribs and barbecued pork chops will be sold on select Fridays and Saturdays.

“The pool managers and the activities around the pool will be family oriented,” said Craft.

Craft said admission fees will increase from $1.50 to $3 for children ages three to 12. Those older than 12 will have to pay $5 instead of $3. Children under three years old will still be admitted free.

Craft hopes to have the pool ready to open on May 26.
