Whitesburg receives $171,480 loan for water treatment plant project

The Capital Projects and Bond Oversight Interim Joint Committee has approved a low-interest loan for $171,480 for improvements to the Whitesburg Water Treatment Plant, according to Senator Johnny Ray Turner, D-Drift. The funding is through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.

“I am pleased that Whitesburg is receiving this money to make needed improvements to the treatment plant and, because of the low-interest loan from the federal stimulus package, the work is being done without any kind of rate in- crease to the residents of Whitesburg,” said Senator Turner.

The funds will be used to construct a powder-activated carbon feed system for the Whitesburg Water Treatment Plant. This system has been requested by the Division of Water in response to recent fuel spills.

“These improvements are important in maintaining a quality water supply in Whitesburg,” added Turner. “Providing safe and clean water is one of my top priorities as a legislator.”

Construction was started in July and is slated for completion in October.

Senator Turner represents the 29th district, which includes Breathitt, Floyd, Knott and Letcher counties and has served in the State Senate since 2001.
