A Whitesburg woman remains in critical condition at a Tennessee hospital after suffering injuries in a two-vehicle collision at Kona on Sunday night.
Kentucky State Police Trooper Loren Holliday said a preliminary investigation indicates that Nicholas Smith, 20, of Whitesburg was traveling toward Jenkins in a Ford Ranger pickup truck around 8 p.m. on June 12 when he crossed the centerline near Kona Hill and hit a Ford Mustang being driven by Sonja Thomas “in almost a head on manner.”
Thomas and Lacey Carter, 17, a passenger in Smith’s vehicle, were airlifted to Holston Valley Medical Center in Kingsport. Carter was being treated for non life-threatening injuries at Holston Valley.
Holliday said drugs and alcohol have been ruled out as contributing factors to the accident.
Smith was treated at the Whitesburg hospital and later released.
