Who was the meanest, smartest child?

This week I’ve been wanting to write about all the good conversations we have in the choir before church gets started. Most of the time Arthur Christon is the ringleader on getting conversations started, but this past Sunday I will have to say it was Linda Buttrey.

She started out by saying that it took her a while to get her throat cleared up before she could sing and the reason was probably because she didn’t talk very much. I couldn’t help it, I said, “No, no, no, Linda honey, that can’t be the reason, just back up now it has to be something else.”

Well, that got us all laughing, and I said, “I would hate to get in a conversation with you and Al (Bates), I wouldn’t be able to get a word in edgewise.” Linda said she thought Al could outtalk her.

Then Gwen Christon said she bet I was the meanest child my mommy had. I told her, “Oh, no! That would have to be my baby sister Delores. When we got in trouble once for going to the head of the holler to visit some people Daddy took us to visit all the time, he rode up the holler in his little Doodle Bug, VW, and found us as we were walking back down the holler. He just stopped and told to break our own switches with us and went on back home. So, we talked about what kind of switches we were all going to get, and if we got big ones he might feel sorry for us and debated back and forth about what kind would be the best. Needless to say, Delores ended up with a horseweed. I can’t remember what Daddy did about it and if that was what he whipped her with or not. I can just imagine his face when he saw it though.” Serves Delores right though, she ended up with a son that was just like her growing up, Steven Holbrook.

Once Delores found some questions to ask your parents about their children, such as: Which one of your children is the meanest? Which one of your children was the easiest to raise? Which one of your children is the smartest? Other questions too but you get the idea. So, she was by herself with Mommy and started asking her these questions.

When she asked her who was the smartest, Mommy said, “Well, I guess that would have to be Lucille.” Delores was surprised at that answer and asked her, “You think Lucille is smarter than Jeanette?” Mommy said, “I forgot all about Jeanette.” When Delores asked her who was the meanest, Mommy just started laughing. Delores said, “What, Mommy, what’s so funny about that?” Then she asked her again. Mommy said, “I can’t tell you, I’m afraid I’ll hurt your feelings.”

Our church family is so important to my husband and me. I’m so thankful we are still able to meet in person instead of online. Our messages Sunday were so beneficial for all the problems we face in this day and age. Did you know the Bible tells us how to rely on God when we are going through the dark times? No matter what our problems are, the Bible will have the answers.

I haven’t been able to get to the Farmer’s Market here lately because of all the garden stuff we have been gathering ourselves. Now we have tomatoes, peppers, and Little Brown Greasy Beans coming in like crazy. One of my church sisters, Phyllis Adams, and I always ask each other what we have been putting up when we see each other at Wednesday evening church services.

My husband has said that we have put up enough food this year that we won’t have to raise one next year. I’m like, “I’ll write that down somewhere, ‘cause I know what’s going to take place next spring.” The problem is he thinks there should be no empty spaces whatsoever in the garden, regardless if you don’t need 20 pepper plants or 25 tomato plants. Okay, enough complaining.

Once again I want to mention these prayer requests our whole county is praying for. Billy Adams will be having open-heart surgery next Wednesday, September 8, at Central Baptist Hospital in Lexington. He has had lots of medical problems and this surgery comes with many risks because of those.

Brandon Robinson will be having his brain cancer surgery Wednesday, September 1, in Florida. There have been so many people that have reached out to Brandon and his wife Stephanie and Brandon says that has made all their troubles so much easier to bear.

Larry Everidge will also be having open heart surgery on Wednesday, the 1st, at Holston Valley. He also has many other complications along with terrible knee pain and so this surgery is very dangerous.

Caleb Baker will also be going for his doctor’s appointment on Sept. 1. We thank God for sparing Caleb’s life and bringing him this far after his four-wheeler accident.

Then, there’s our newest leukemia victim, Camden Cook. He has already had to start his treatments and they are very, very strong. Please remember to pray for their whole family.

Also remember to pray for all our families that have lost loved ones, especially my pastor, Bill Jones, and his family.

Just a few birthdays and anniversaries I’ll mention this week. Jerry and Glenda Watts celebrated their wedding anniversary on the 29th. Courtney Venters will have a birthday on September 1. Gary Hall, Pam Sexton Taylor, and Crystal Bernice McCleer will have birthdays on the 2nd. Melissa Mullins’s birthday is on the 3rd.

Please know if you need a church, Letcher Independent Baptist will be more than happy to have you. I don’t know how people make it without the fellowship of a church.
