Woman gets probation, order to repay $49,000 in Harlan bingo theft

An eastern Kentucky woman who oversaw bingo games has been sentenced to five years probation for stealing money from a veterans group. She has also been ordered to repay $49,000.

Julie L. Weedman of Evarts is the former treasurer of the ladies auxiliary at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Lodge 11139 in Middlesboro. She pleaded guilty to a 97-count indictment.

The missing funds came to light in the fall of 2006 when a bank notified the charity’s president that a check bounced.

The state Office of Charitable Gaming conducted an investigation during which Weedman was questioned and the charity’s financial records were examined. Investigators concluded that the 37-year-old had forged the president’s signature on checks, cashed them and pocketed the money.

Defense attorney Daniel Yeast said the sentence will allow Weedman to make amends for her actions.
