Work zone safety urged this week

Safe driving practices through highway work zones are being encouraged this week, which is National Work Zone Safety Week.

“This is not just a job-site issue. It’s a very serious human health and safety issue,” said Lt. Governor Daniel Mongiardo. “Everyone can make a positive difference by following a few simple rules when approaching a work zone.”

More than 40,000 people are injured yearly in work zones and thousands are killed. The majority of those, 85 percent, are motorists. According to police records, six people were killed in Kentucky highway work zones in 2007.

The top 10 work zone safety tips are:

1. Expect the unexpected.

2. Slow down.

3. Don’t tailgate. Keep a safe distance between you and the car ahead of you.

4. Keep a safe distance between your vehicle and the construction workers and equipment.

5. Pay attention to the signs.

6. Obey road crew flaggers.

7. Stay alert and minimize distractions.

8. Keep up with the traffic flow.

9. Schedule enough time and call 511 or go to www.511.ky.gov for Kentucky traffic and travel information.

10. Be patient and stay calm.
