The Fall Arts Weekend at Pine Mountain Settlement School will off er workshops in weaving, nature photography, dry stone masonry, and hickory bark chair bottom replacement. The activities begin with dinner on Friday, Oct. 8, and continue through lunch on Sunday, Oct. 10.
Dr. Thomas G. Barnes, award-winning author and nature photographer and University of Kentucky Extension Wildlife Specialist and professor in the Department of Forestry, will lead the nature photography workshop. The workshop is designed for beginning and advanced photographers.
Participants should bring their own digital cameras and related equipment, and a stick drive with five of their photographs. Cost is $300 and includes tuition, meals, snacks, and lodging.
Pat Begley, Settlement School staff member, will teach the weaving workshop. Participants can focus on one of three types of weaving — pattern weaving, rag weaving, or loopers. All materials are provided. Those who choose to work on rag rug projects may bring their own material.
The workshop is for beginning and intermediatelevel students. The cost is $240, which includes workshop materials, tuition, meals, snacks, and lodging.
Award-winning dry stone mason Richard Tufnell will teach students how to construct a dry stone wall. Participants will learn how to cut and place stones, and will work on a short stone wall. Class size is limited to 15.
Cost for this workshop is $335, which includes tools, safety glasses, tuition, meals, snacks, and lodging.
The fourth workshop on replacing a hickory bark chair seat is a three-hour session from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Oct. 9. Settlement School staff members Matthew Boggs and Paul Creech will teach the class. Participants may bring their own chairs or stools to work on. Cost is $75 and includes all materials, tuition, and lunch. Class size is limited to six.
