Wreck fatal to Colson man, 29





Funeral services were held this week for a 29-year-old Letcher County man who died December 19 after a two-vehicle collision at Colson.

Eric Neal Akemon, the driver of a 2007 Dodge Charger, was traveling north on Highway 7 when he crossed the centerline at 6:51 p.m. and struck a Ford F- 150 truck head on, according to Kentucky State Police. The truck was being driven by Christopher Shawn Simmons who was traveling south. Police said both ve- hicles came to a stop in the roadway.

Akemon, of Colson, was pronounced dead at the scene by the Letcher County Coroner’s Office. Simmons was airlifted from the scene for medical treatment. Police said no seat belts were in use at the time of the collision.

KSP Trooper Ben McCray and Letcher County Sheriff’s Deputy Mike Dingus responded to the scene along with the Neon Fire and Rescue Squad and Colson Fire Department. Trooper McCray is in charge of the investigation, which remains open.

Akemon was a son of Danny and Geneva Hall Akemon. In addition to his parents, he is survived by a son, Dusty Wayne Akemon of Deane; a brother, Steven Michael Akemon of Deane; a sister, Cindy Collins of Isom; and a maternal grandmother, Redallis Cornett.

Funeral services were held December 22 at Letcher Funeral Home. Burial was in Green Acres Cemetery at Ermine.
