A two-vehicle traffic accident on the Whitesburg bypass Saturday afternoon left one man dead and one woman injured — apparently critically.
Shawn Roark, 36, of Kingscreek died about 2:30 p.m. Saturday after he was thrown from the Toyota pickup he was driving. Letcher County Coroner Marty Baker pronounced Roark dead at the scene. The cause of death is listed as head trauma.
A woman riding with Roark, Dorothy Hall Gibson of Premium, was also thrown from the pickup. She was airlifted to Holston Valley Medical Center in Kingsport, Tenn. for treatment.
Sources say the wreck occurred after the truck being driven by Roark collided with another pickup, the driver of which was identified as Eric Sexton, a Letcher County man believed to be in his 30s. Sexton was not seriously injured.
As of 7:25 p.m. Saturday, police still had not released any information about the accident.
A portion of the Whitesburg bypass stretching from the old Whitesburg High School to the Ernest Cook Memorial Park remained closed early Saturday night while Kentucky State Police continued their investigation of the wreck.
Letcher Funeral Home will be in charge of funeral services for Roark. A spokesman there said funeral arrangements are not complete.
Sources told The Mountain Eagle the investigation of the accident is complex and may result in criminal charges being filed. More information about the accident will be provided as it become available.
