A Cowan woman was killed in a head-on collision Tuesday morning after she fell asleep driving on her way home from work near Payne Gap, according to Letcher County Deputy Coroner Robbie Campbell.
Kentucky State Police said Amy Ison, 30, was traveling south on US 119 in a 2003 Volkswagen Jetta when she crossed the centerline and struck a 2003 Suzuki X17 operated by 48-year-old Robert Metcalf at 7:13 a.m. on June 8. Metcalf’s vehicle was northbound.
Police said Metcalf had to be freed from his vehicle before he could be flown by Wings Medical Helicopter to Holston Valley Medical Center in Kingsport, Tenn. Two passengers riding with Metcalf were taken to Whitesburg Appalachian Regional Hospital and treated for minor injuries.
The collision is still under investigation by KSP Trooper Derek Hall.
Campbell said Ison, a registered nurse, had just finished a 14-hour shift at Pikeville Medical Center.
Letcher Funeral Home has charge of arrangements, which were still pending at press time.
