Seventh District Supreme Court Justice Sam Wright failed to win reelection to his second term, finishing the primary race third.
Robert “Bob” Conley, longtime circuit judge for Greenup and Lewis counties, and Chris Harris, a state representative from Pike County, will face each other in a runoff election in November.
Wright is a former Letcher District Judge and Letcher Circuit Judge. He ran for Supreme Court in 2015 to finish the term of Will T. Scott, who resigned to run for governor. Wright took office in 2016.
Wright received 3,064 votes in Letcher County to 195 for Conley and 377 for Harris, but the big win in his home county was not enough to sustain him in the 22-county district.
Overall, Conley was the top contender with 32,782 votes, and Harris finished second with 34,807. Wright was third with 24,470.
