Yonts is chosen to lead county school system

Letcher County Public Schools have a new superintendent.

Denise Banks Yonts, Director of Curriculum and Instruction for the school district, has been hired to fill the position left vacant when Superintendent Tony Sergent retired. Yonts was hired during a special called meeting of the board of education on Monday night. She was one of six candidates for the position.

Yonts, 47, is a native of Whitesburg and a graduate of Whitesburg High School and Morehead State University. She was assistant principal at LCCHS for several years before moving to the central office in July 2013. She has worked for the district for 26 years.

Yonts took her position at the central office soon after Sergent was appointed superintendent, and served as the director of curriculum and instruction throughout his superintendency.

She is married to Rocky Yonts. The couple live at Jeremiah.
