Eleven-year-old Spencer Stevenson, grandson of Verna and Chester Rayburn, was selected to attend the Nashville Ballet’s Summer Intensive dance program. In the spring, he mailed the ballet an audition tape that demonstrated his technique and he was accepted into the program, where he was placed with the 16- to 18-year-old boys for training. The curriculum covered jazz, contemporary and theater techniques. The three-week-long dance program included eight hours of training on weekdays and two hours on Saturday. The students were also treated to outings on the weekends, such as a trip to Nashville Shores. A performance on the last day of the program demonstrated the students’ accomplishments during training.
