The young students in Appalshop’s “Passing the Pick and Bow” program will present their spring recital of traditional mountain music on Thursday, May 9, at 6:30 p.m. The program will be in the Appalshop Theater at 91 Madison Avenue in Whitesburg, with a reception to follow.
“Passing the Pick and Bow” brings local traditional musicians to after-school music classes at six schools in Letcher County and Jenkins. The students learn Appalachian music on fiddle, banjo, and guitar. “Pick and Bow” is part of Appalshop’s continuing work to preserve mountain traditions and to pass them on to new generations. Other facets of this work include Old Time Days (day-long teaching workshops), square dances, radio broadcasts on Appalshop’s WMMT-FM, and work with the Cowan Creek Mountain Music School. Earlier Pick and Bow groups have performed at the Kentucky Folklife Festival and at the state capitol in Frankfort. Pick and Bow is supported by student fees, school funds, and the National Endowment for the Arts.
