Sauté, dice, chop, roast and whip! These are all cooking techniques Kentucky youth can learn through the University of Kentucky Cooperative Extension Service’s Super Star Chef camp 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., July 17, 18, 19, at Letcher County Extension Office.
During the camp, youth ages 9 to 18 can gain handson cooking experience and will be introduced to new foods and recipes as they prepare healthy dishes like fresh salsa, fruity parfaits, tasty veggie pizza and oven-baked calzones.
“During the three-day program, participants learn cooking skills and how to make healthy choices while tasting new recipes and gaining confidence in the kitchen,” said Debra Cotterill, director of the Kentucky Nutrition Education Program. “These are lessons they’ll use for life, and building healthy habits now will help them grow into healthy adults.”
No previous cooking skills are required for the free program. Some participants just want to learn how to make an afterschool snack, while others dream of having a restaurant or cooking show.
Participants are encouraged to sample all the recipes they prepare and to continue using their new cooking skills at home. “When the students taste foods prepared in new ways and are engaged in the cooking process, they are more likely to try it and enjoy the dish,” Cotterill said.
