Vision loss may cause hallucinations

DEAR DR. ROACH: When I lost the vision in my eye in an accident, I had Charles Bonnet syndrome hallucinations. I am 80 years old, and I went completely blind in one eye. There were patterns that I saw whenever my eye was unfocused, which pretty much obscured everything. I saw complicated figures like very bright TV. I have read […]

Sunscreen doesn’t work as well as it says: What to do?

TRENTON, N.J. Something to consider as you head to the beach or pool as the summer continues: That sunscreen in your bag may not protect your skin as much as you think. Even after regulators updated standards for labeling sunscreen four years ago, tests have shown many provide far less protection than advertised. That’s a worry because too much exposure […]

WASHINGTON Overdoses don’t happen just to heroin addicts — patients who legally use strong painkillers called opioids are at risk in the nation’s epidemic, too. My 15-year-old stepdaughter said that since she was born in […]

Strange but True

• It was noted American poet and feminist Adrienne Rich who made the following sage observation: “Language is as real, as tangible, in our lives as streets, pipelines, telephone switchboards, microwaves, radioactivity, cloning laboratories, nuclear power stations.” • When you were growing up, did kids call each other “chicken” to insult each other’s bravery? In all likelihood, the answer is […]

Marinate salmon in juice

I try to get fish on my family’s table two or three times a week. The research describing the incredible heart and brain benefits to eating fish, especially fatty fish like salmon, is compelling. An extra bonus? Fatty fish is more filling, too, which means I’m less hungry for late night snacks a few hours after dinner. However, many home […]
